OKAGE Spring Conference 2010

Mark your calendar now and plan to attend the OKAGE “Springs!” Conference, March 27, 2010. Refresh and recharge yourself and your teaching colleagues at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area near Sulphur, Oklahoma. Park rangers will lead two nature walks that will showcase the natural environment and historic landscapes of the area.

Web-Based GIS: “Happy Eating” to “America’s Drive In”

Join one of the nation’s experts (Joseph Kerski, ESRI) in web-based Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for a three-day institute (field trip included) as we examine phenomena including tornadoes, climate, land use, historical population, and even Sonic Drive-In, from local to Oklahoma to global scale.
This institute will use digital maps, imagery, and analysis to help teachers meet their students’ needs for spatial learning skills in a PASS-based and inquiry-driven environment.
We will get out in the field and collect data using GPS receivers, and map and analyze the results using free multimedia tools that you can start using right away!

Teddy Roosevelt’s Dream: National Park Service Footprints in Oklahoma
June 27-July 1, 2010
The National Park Service (NPS), the “brainchild” of Theodore Roosevelt, has a long and colorful history of preserving natural and historic sites throughout the country. Oklahoma is home to three of the most unusual, distinctive and different NPS sites: the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site, and the Oklahoma City National Memorial.
Participants will experience “behind the scenes” visits to all three NPS sites, interact with site interpreters, geographers and historians, and create lesson plans that reflect the NPS “footprint” in the state.

Windshop: Renewable & Sustainable Energy Resources

The workshop is designed to provide teachers with information and resources about renewable energy. The workshop will focus on wind energy but will also include information and resources on solar energy and biofuels.
Field trips will include tours of the Bergey WindPower facility in Norman and the Blue Canyon Wind Farm near the Wichita Mountains.
Teachers will learn how to analyze landscapes from a geographic perspective and gather ideas on how to implement renewable energy curriculum into the classroom.

Get Your Kicks on Route 66: Okie Migrations

Although decommissioned by the federal government in 1985, Route 66 is steeped in history and nostalgia. Participants will gain an understanding of the cultural, historical, geographic and economic impact of Route 66 by traveling remaining sections of the road in Oklahoma and studying how it shaped the communities through which it ran. Participants will compare landscape changes from the 1920s to the present day on the “Mother Road.”

GeoBoot Camp Training for New Teacher Consultants

Do you have a full set of tools and tricks to help students become geographically literate? Do you inspire others teachers to integrate geography into their curriculum - without them even knowing it? Do you marvel each day at the interconnectedness of geography in everything you see, hear, and read? If so, there is a good chance you have what it takes to survive OKAGE’s upcoming GeoBoot Camp, a weekend retreat designed especially for those wishing to become Teacher Consultants (TCs).
By becoming an OKAGE TC, you will join a vibrant network of educators around the state who are inspired and excited about improving geography education and geographic literacy in Oklahoma. You will also have the opportunity to participate in-state and national committees, programs, travel opportunities, and professional development programs available only to OKAGE TCs.
You will have the chance to present original lesson plans and ideas at teacher peer workshops and can choose to get involved with exciting National Geographic Society initiatives such as Geography Action! and “My Wonderful World.” For your time and effort as a TC, you will receive incentives and compensation for representing OKAGE at school district in-service meetings, and regional, state and national conferences, as well as free materials for your classroom.
Scheduled for February 18 - 20, 2010, the GeoBoot Camp will take place at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. GeoBoot Camp participants will eceive hands-on, interactive training from seasoned Teacher Consultants in order to learn the skills and embrace the resources you will need to become a “geo-ambassador” around the state.
Partcipation in the GeoBoot Camp is free-of-charge, including hotel accommodations and meals, substitute reimbursement and mileage.

2009 World Geography Academy

The 2009 World Geography Academy is a three-day professional development institute for world studies and world geography teachers in grades 6 and 7. The Academy is beneficial to teachers who are preparing students for the Grade 7 World Geography criterion-referenced test.
The registration fee will be $75 per participant for all three days, which includes continental breakfast, lunch and break refreshments. School purchase orders will be accepted.
Oklahoma classroom teachers who have achieved “Teacher Consultant” status through training with OKAGE will present. Other presenters may include State Department of Education representatives with expertise in student assessment.
This Academy meets the definition of high quality professional development as required by the No Child Left Behind Act [Title IX, Part A, Section 9101 (34)]. The activities in this Academy are directly aligned to the Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS), student academic achievement standards and assessments. The United States Historical Geography Institute (USHGI) is a one-day professional development institute for 5th grade Social Studies, 8th grade U.S. History, and high school U.S. History and World Geography teachers. The Institute is beneficial to teachers who are preparing students for the Grade 5 Social Studies criterion-referenced test (CRT), Grade 8 U.S. History CRT and high school U.S. History End-of-Instruction exam.
Elementary, middle, and high school teachers will follow separate “tracks” of instruction. Each track will include three breakout sessions that provide 2 - 3 classroom-tested lesson plan ideas per session. Oklahoma classroom teachers who have achieved “Teacher Consultant” status through training with OKAGE will present, as well as other educators selected for their expertise in U.S. history.

ArkLaTex Institute

“ArkLaTex Tornadoes & Topography: Exploring the Impact of the Ouachita Mountains” involves teachers from the Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas Geographic Alliances for two days of classroom study and field experience. Participants will learn about the interaction between topography (elevation, relief, natural and man-made features and their structural relationships) and weather (precipitation, temperature, and severe storms) in the “ArkLaTex region” of the Ouachita Mountains of southern Arkansas and the Red River basin. This opportunity is limited to the first 10 teachers from Oklahoma that submit an application by Friday, May 1, 2009. Any Oklahoma preK-12 teacher or pre-service teacher may apply. Participants should be reasonably fit, able to climb medium grades and stairs at higher elevations, and carry their own luggage.
Geo-Tripping on the Arkansas River

“GeoTripping on the Arkansas River” is a week long field expedition that will take participants on a geographic exploration of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado. Approximately 20 teachers will receive direct instruction from experts and scientists dealing with water conservation and other current issues affecting the impact of the Arkansas River. This field study of the geography of the Arkansas River includes an exploration of the hydrologic, environmental and cultural issues with experts from the Army Corps of Engineers, conservation district offices, and the United States Geological Survey. There will also be a half-day white water eco-tour of a segment of the river in Colorado. Participants should be reasonably fit, able to climb medium grades and stairs at higher elevations, and carry their own luggage.

This three-day workshop will provide technological skills and ideas that can readily be incorporated into everyday classroom instruction. Participants will learn how use technology to more efficiently and effectively supplement the textbook, overall curriculum, and individual lesson plans.
Participants will receive instruction on effectively utilizing the SMART Board interactive white board. The SMART Board is a touch-sensitive display that connects to your computer and digital projector. Using a finger, you can control computer applications, write notes, pull up charts and images, search the Internet, play videos and save your work. The SMART Board is an especially valuable technology, as it has the flexibility to engage all learning styles. The workshop will discuss basic software utilization, understanding file formats and organization, printing options, editing and saving photo files, creating CDs, and integrating online resources, scanners, and digital cameras into the classroom. The workshop will also highlight geography-related Web sites that contain content, lesson plans, activities and other resources for the social studies and geography classroom.

“See the USA the OKAGE Way!” focuses on a basic knowledge and understanding of the human and physical geography of the United States as a nation. Participants will gain a solid working knowledge of U.S. geography, including the concept of region from a spatial perspective, physical systems and human systems. Join one of the nation's experts in web-based Geographic Information Systems for a three-day workshop (field trip included) to bring free Internet resources into the classroom and to help teachers meet their students' needs for spatial learning skills in a PASS-based and inquiry-driven environment. The Institute is limited to 20 teachers.
As computer software becomes within the financial reach of more school districts, and as more GIS materials become Web-based and Internet-accessible, OKAGE believes that technical elements of teaching with GIS are “easier” and can provide elementary and secondary students the increasingly valuable benefits of inquiry-based learning. Teachers will learn about “real-life” applications of GIS as well as do some field research on its use in locating commercial establishments, siting neighborhood schools and anticipating future population growth areas.

GeoTech Refresher Workshop

This workshop will review basic technological skills of the Microsoft programs with emphasis on PowerPoint in order to efficiently and effectively to supplement textbook materials, your overall curriculum, individual lesson plans, and personal pedagogy. The workshop will also focus on more advanced topics as they arise during the session. Each participant is encouraged to bring existing PowerPoint files so that various skills can be applied and competency can be assessed.
OKAGE will provide continental breakfast, snack refreshments and lunch. However, you will need to provide your own lodging if you wish to come on Friday evening. The US Historical Geography Institute is a one-day professional development institute for 5th grade Social Studies, 8th grade U.S. History and high school U.S. History (end of instruction) and World Geography teachers. The Institute is beneficial to teachers who are preparing students for the grade 5 Social Studies criterion referenced test (CRT), Grade 8 US History CRT, and high school end of instruction exam.
Elementary, middle, and high school teachers will follow separate "tracks" of instruction. Each track will include three breakout sessions that provide 2-3 classroom-tested lesson plan ideas per session.

GeoMathematics/GeoLiteracy Institute

A three-day institute primarily for K-8 Oklahoma teachers presented by teacher consultants with the Arizona Geographic Alliance. The national award-winning GeoMath and GeoLit programs integrate state and national social studies/geography standards with reading/writing and mathematics standards. Each teacher will receive a CD with the 170 curriculum-integrated lessons correlated with the National Geography Standards and containing assessment instruments that promote skills and content measured on the state-mandated reading, writing and mathematics criterion- referenced tests. Participants will align each of the lessons with the pertinent reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies standards and objectives in the Oklahoma Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS).

GeoTech 2008: Technology in the Social Studies Classroom Session I

The workshop will discuss basic software utilization, understanding file formats and organization, printing options, editing and saving photo files, creating CDs, and integrating online resources, scanners, and digital cameras into the classroom. The workshop will also highlight geography-related Web sites that contain content, lesson plans, activities and other resources for the social studies and geography classroom.

Git Along Little Dogies: Territorial Cattle Trails of Oklahoma

A weeklong field study primarily for upper elementary, middle/junior high school and Oklahoma History teachers presented in collaboration with the Agriculture in the Classroom program. The Institute will focus on the geographic, historical and economic issues involved in territorial land use policies and the cattle ranching business during the post-Civil War era. The Institute includes a three-day field expedition exploring segments of the historic Great Western and Chisholm Trails to see evidence of the cattle industry’s impact on Oklahoma Territory.

U.S. Human and Physical Geography Institute

A weeklong institute primarily for fourth grade teachers, focusing on a basic knowledge and understanding of the human and physical geography of the United States as a nation. Looking beyond the regional geography approach often found in fourth grade textbooks, participants will gain a solid working knowledge of U.S. geography, including the concept of region from a spatial perspective, physical and human systems. Participants will receive classroom-tested lessons and other materials to enrich their classroom instruction.

Historically Black Communities in Oklahoma Institute II

Continuing the success of 2007’s Historically Black Communities Institute, this second weeklong institute is primarily for upper elementary and middle/junior high school and Oklahoma History teachers. Focusing on communities founded in Indian and Oklahoma Territories by African American freedmen and former slaves, participants will integrate content lectures, field studies in historically black towns, and the resources of the Oklahoma Historical Society to discover how these communities have contributed to the economic, demographic, political and social fabric of Oklahoma.

World Geography Academy

The 2007 World Geography Academy, presented by OKAGE and co-sponsored by State Superintendent Sandy Garrett and Oklahoma Council for the Social Studies, is a three-day professional development institute for world studies and geography teachers in grades 6 and 7. The fee for all three days is $75.
The Academy is beneficial to teachers who are preparing students for the Grade 7 World Geography criterion-referenced test. Oklahoma classroom teachers who have achieved "Teacher Consultant" status through training with OKAGE will present. Other presenters may include representatives from the State Department of Education with expertise in student assessment.
This Academy meets the definition of high quality professional
development as required by the No Child Left Behind Act [Title IX, Part A, Section 9101 (34)]. The activities in this Academy are
directly aligned to the Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS), student academic achievement standards and assessments. The primary goal of the Academy is to improve and increase teachers’ knowledge of world studies and geography, and help enable teachers to become highly qualified.
