Geography History Institute
June 16-20, 2008
Michigan Geographic Alliance and Michigan Council for History Education, funded by a Highly Qualified Teacher Grant, will offer two one-week institutes for teachers. The goal of the Michigan Geography and History Grant is to help teachers implement new middle school and high school content expectations for geography and history. As part of the 90 hours of professional development offered to teachers over a two-year period, these summer workshops wil include integration of content and teaching strategies for U. S. history and geography and world history and geography courses in grades 6-12
The institutes in the summer of 2008 will be held simultaniously in Lansing and Grand Rapids during the week of June 16-20. This workshop is free to Lansing and Grand Rapids teachers; other teachers may register ($100) until spaces are filled. GEO 2006: Geography is Where It's At!
June 26-28, 2006
GEO 2006 will be offered on June 26-27-28, 2006 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It will take place at the Macomb Intermediate School District, 44001 Garfield Road, Clinton Township, MI 48038. This three-day geography series will bring together elementary and secondary teachers who are interested in improving their teaching of geography and in expanding the role of geography in their schools. GEO 2006 is being co-sponsored by the Michigan Geographic Alliance and the Macomb ISD. The series will include a comprehensive overview of the Five Themes of Geography, the new Geography-related Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs), Integration of Geography and History, and Geography Assessments. A fieldtrip on the Clinton River and Lake St. Clair and the Metro Beach Nature Center will investigate local geography applications and its integration with science. Finally, a team from the Michigan Geographic Alliance will train teachers on Land Use (elementary) or Energy and Resources (middle-high school). These units are from the Michigan Environmental Education Curriculum Support project, and include dynamic free materials. CEUs are pending. Teacher grades 3-12 are welcome. The registration fee is $125 which includes: continental breakfasts, lunches and many materials. The registration deadline is May 8, 2006. Earthwatch and the National Geographic Education Foundation invite K-12 science and social studies teachers to apply to work with field scientists on conservation and geography research projects worldwide with Earthwatch.
Earthwatch Institute is an international nonprofit organization founded in 1971 to support field research in pursuit of environmental conservation and cultural preservation.
What does a fellowship entail?
--Work as a team for one to two weeks with leading field research scientists, mapping and monitoring varied species in diverse natural environments --Post journals and photos from the field to your students and/or partnering classroom host via a Web site --Develop lessons/projects to implement in the classroom and share as part of an online community --Upon return, present to colleagues at your school, professional in-service workshops, and conferences --Fellowship covers room, board, and travel stipend to field site (release time NOT included)
