About the North Carolina Geographic Alliance

The North Carolina Geographic Alliance, founded in 1987, is an organization of teachers, geographers, university educators and others interested in geography and geography education. The purpose of the North Carolina Geographic Alliance (NCGA) is to promote and improve geographic knowledge and understanding and enhance the teaching of geography in North Carolina classrooms.

To carry out that mission, the NCGA offers workshops, institutes, and other teacher training programs; distributes educational materials about geography; and promotes geography-oriented activities such as Geography Action!, Geography Awareness Week and the National Geographic Bee. The NCGA is part of the network of state geographic alliances affiliated with the National Geographic Society. In its first decade of operation, the NCGA raised more than one million dollars to support geography education programs in North Carolina.
