About Our Environment and Oceans for Life Community

The oceans belong to everyone. Teachers are the greatest natural resource we have on planet Earth; they are the ones who will ultimately save our oceans.

—Gil Grosvenor, Chairman, National Geography Society

The National Geographic Society recognizes that a healthy environment is a global issue – one that sustains all life as we know it. It is important to work with educators to include this message in the classroom everywhere we can by providing facts, news, and classroom activities for all teachers and their students.

The purpose of this Web site is the following:
  • To link education and the environment for our classrooms and society.
  • To provide teachers with tools and resources to instruct students on the importance of a healthy environment.
  • To provide a multimedia "teacher’s tool kit" that can be tailored for use in the classroom.
  • To provide "green" actions for everyone so that we can all preserve our environment.
  • To demonstrate how geography is central to understanding about the world we live in.
  • To promote ocean literacy in our classrooms and society.
